Design matters

iPod NanoI love well designed things. I’ve talked about my iPod Nano in the past because it is so well designed that it is a pleasure to use.

Well in the last two weeks I got two more items that I appreciate their design. My new laptop bag has so many nice design features in it that one of my mastermind groups would make fun of it. Timbuk2 laptop bag
But, it truly is well designed. The people at Timbuk2 refined their bags to create truly functional pieces. I love using my laptop bag now and it makes travel a joy.

Monteblanc Starwalker PenI received a wonderful present yesterday. My girlfriend bought me a really nice pen. I’ve been talking about the Montblanc Starwalker pen for months and all the little design features it has. The cap screws off and then screws on the end of the pen while you use it. A great feature I haven’t seen on any other pen. But the best feature I love is the grippy part where you hold the pen. No other pen except the Sensa has a design feature in this area that is so cool.

If you are a designer, design your product to be incredibly easy to use. People like me with appreciate the design elements and ease of use and will pay the premium for such quality.

All Aboard the Biofuel Virgin Train

Richard Branson is already implementing alternative fuel. He will show that it is doable now and profitable.

Europe’s first biodiesel-powered passenger train left London’s Euston station for North Wales last week, marking another milestone of billionaire Sir Richard Branson’s plan to fight global warming. Fueled by 20 percent vegetable oil, Branson’s Virgin Trains began their six month trail period. He hopes that eventually his whole fleet will be converted to run on biofuels.

Richard Branson to Help Build Elephant Corridor

This is the type of charity work that I find inspiring. Give where you do business.

Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, announced that Virgin would help to create a vital new elephant corridor, north of Mount Kenya, which would provide a lifeline for local communities and the dwindling elephant population in the region.

Around 2 000 elephants, part of the Laikipia-Samburu elephant population, will benefit from the Virgin Mount Kenya Elephant Corridor, which will cost up to $1mn to build and maintain over the next ten years. Sir Richard is donating $250 000 to the project. It will be created between the Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve and the Mount Kenya National Reserve, enabling elephants to benefit from the diverse resources offered by each habitat. Mount Kenya is a World Heritage site and one of the most impressive landscapes in Eastern Africa.

Sir Richard made the announcement as he arrived in Kenya to launch Virgin Atlantic’s new daily service between London Heathrow and the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Richard Branson adds tribal elder to list of achievements

Richard BransonI’m part Cherokee and I also wanted to be part of the tribe. Richard Branson’s actions have renewed that in me.

Sir Richard Branson, the President of Virgin Atlantic, has been made a tribal Elder in a ceremony held in the Masai Mara in Kenya. He was in the region celebrating Virgin Atlantic’s new daily services to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The traditional ceremony, known in the Masai language as ‘Ipayiani’, was conducted by the Masai Elders in the presence of around 30 members of the local tribal community. The Masai tribe awarded Richard the honour in return for bringing prosperity to the land.

Today’s ceremony means that Richard has now officially become a Masai Elder and has joined the College of Elders in the Masai community.
