My favorite WordPress themes

I’ve been asked a lot about my favorite WordPress themes lately. So I thought I would share.

Which theme is best for your best will depend on how much content you have, what type of content, if you are new and just starting or you’ve been around awhile.

I recommend themes that have your search form, newsletter form, RSS feed and social media link on the right under the header graphic.  People expect it there and eyeball studies have shown it to be a great place for this type of content.  Major navigation under the under the header is a bit more popular than the links to be above the header graphic but both are okay.  Explain what you do easily and don’t go crazy on graphic, they should help not be overpowering and they should contribute to your message.

Here are the website themes that I recommend for blogging/portal websites.

  • K2 – This is the theme I give people most often who are starting from scratch.  It’s flexible and has some nice features.
  • Thesis – I also like Thesis which costs $80 as the affiliate blocks area is a nice touch, great for frequent bloggers with products or affiliate programs.  You can do affiliate blocks in K2 as well.

Magazine themes are also becoming more and more popular as the home page can show a great overview of what is the on the website, much like a magazine cover but better.

  • Streamline – great for people that have a lot of content and products
  • Lifestyle – good if you have products and at least three categories of blog posts
  • TV – great if you have all video content
  • Album – great for photo -  content, models, photographers, etc.

I also like Community for its AJAX tabbed widgets, very cool.

Remember that this is the Internet and your theme can be changed at anytime, and will has you develop more content. It’s not a book where you are stuck with your published book.
