We are in a time of creativity.  More than ever.  I heard recently that MFA (Masters of Fine Arts) is going to be the new MBA (Master of Business Administration).  Being creative in business is the key now because the MBA stuff can be outsourced.

It’s just a matter of figuring out your business plan to make the idea viable which you can get help with.  All business details that can even be outsourced.  But the passion is the core.  The idea is key.

When I got my business degree I wanted to immediately get my masters.  Even started on it.  Quickly found out that I was being taught the most useless information.  Great if you want to get a job with a large corporation but not practically if you want to start your own business.  So I dropped that and continued on my adventure.

Knowing about marketing is essential but also being creative is required.

I’m a big fan of dreaming.  I get a ton of ideas while dreaming.  This is a good article on how to remember dreams.

Theories abound as to why we dream, how we dream, and what meaning we can assign to our dreams. Many people believe that dreams can provide insights into our lives and feelings, but for most of us, it’s notoriously difficult to remember our dreams. Creativity is a combination of these three elements.

The Dreamer is necessary for creativity in order to form new ideas and goals. The Realist is necessary for creativity as a means to transform ideas into concrete expressions. The Critic is necessary for creativity as a filter and as a stimulus for refinement.

There are a lot of self-help books and experts that tell you the dreamer is the only one you need. That the realist and critic are evil and need to be stopped. Think of how often imagination is extolled as fragile flower to be cherished and never judged. Think of how often people tell you to silence your inner-critic.

I watched the move Big a few months ago with the family. I hadn’t seen it since it came out in the theaters.

The main character is very creative because he really is a kid. By the end of the movie he is bored and not creative anymore. He’s gotten tied up in being a “grown up” and lost his passion for fun. He’s looking at reports and stressing out.

He needs to be creative in order to excel at what he does, but he’s not into it anymore. The business has gotten to him.

Entrepreneurs are like kids. They are creative. They are passionate. If you are an entrepreneur and you lose that creative spark you have a problem. There are many people that can do “things”. Many are not good at being an entrepreneur because they like the “busy work”. Non entrepreneurs like reports, checking email and really wasting time.

Entrepreneurs, well successful entrepreneurs are not smarter than everyone else. Richard Branson didn’t know what “Net” meant recently. He hires people that know that very well.

Don’t worry if you’re smart enough to be an entrepreneur. You may want to ask yourself if you’re dumb enough. I’ve meet many unsuccessful entrepreneurs that are way too smart. They think they can do everything and do. And never get anything else done. I say be dumb and get stuff done. I use to do e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, you name it. I couldn’t get everything done. And I was not successful. I was extremely busy and going broke fast. Not anymore. I focus on new items and use help to the upmost.

A band named The Get Out Clause was Manchester UK wanted to make a video but they couldn’t afford the proper camera crew or equipment.  So they came up with an ingeious idea.  They played around the city in front of the CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras.

If you have never been to the UK they have these CCTV everywhere.  Last summer when Nan and I were in the UK on vacation I was amazed at the number of these things. So this band plays in front of them, some eighty different locations.

And then they ask for the footage under the freedom of information act and they get all the footage for FREE.  That’s right for free.  Then it was just the job of editing it together over their song.

There is always a way.  There is always a solution.  When people go into business I actually get nervous if they have a lot of money because they tend not to think and budget but instead spend like crazy and go out of business in flames quickly.  Someone with little or no money has to think of creative ideas.  And the creative ideas is the stuff that makes a business.  The idea is key.

Many big businesses start new ventures with no money.  It is just a matter of structuring the deal.  The art of the deal as Trump would say.
