It’s been over 6 weeks since the accident. Over six weeks of an enormous amount of oil leaking into the Gulf. Is this ad too late? Why didn’t they do it sooner?

BP is a like alot of older companies. They aren’t use to people being so vocal. With social media and everyone being connected on the Internet the days of business as usual is way way over.

BP said the right things I believe in the video. “We will make this right” and “We apologize”. They are letting everyone know that they screwed up royally and they are committed to making it right. Yes, they have a ton of work ahead of them.

Their massive delay in communicating effectively with the public may be the end of them in the USA in the long-term. You don’t have weeks and weeks to respond effectively. You have five minutes, maybe a day.

Their respond would have been way more effective if they did the 3 A’s of social media brand reputation management.

1. Acknowledge there a problem immediately
2. Apologize very quickly – BP took way way too long to do this
3. Act fast – again BP has been incredible slow

Don’t act like BP, or it could be the end of your business, career or life. Follow the 3 A’s and be real, be honest.

Best Ways To Keep Social In Social Media Marketing And Still Make Money

With social media you have to resist the opportunity to “hard sell”. It’s like used car sales people selling during a funeral. Instead of getting clients, you just made sure that these people will never buy from you ever. Why? Because it is a against etiquette to do this during social occasions. Social media is not so hard lined but close. I’ve seen people sell right away with an auto message when I first started following them with buy my stuff. Not cool. I’ve even seen people harassing others for promoting their products on social networks.

Let’s look at Twitter a micro-blog that limits what you can type to 140 characters. It’s growing quit fast 1300+% in the last year. And like any other social media network or party you have to know how to handle yourself.

So how do you keep social in social media and still make money? By being conversational. Start off with offering expertise in your field. Have a maintenance tip, or how to save money? Tweet about it. Act as if you were at a party. If someone complains about something give a quick tip to solve it. Comment on other’s tweets. Only once you have established yourself as an interesting cool person can you then tweet something about your business. Mix business tweets with conversational tweets. And don’t tweet about everything you do. Watch this video about how annoying that can be.

Mixing it up

So how do you get a good mix of tweets? Keep 90%+ of what you share on Twitter of personal insights, tips, helpful links and thoughts and less than 10% of messages that directly benefit you like your business. I do the old 80/20 rule but found that the 20% part of equation was way to much so I use the 90/10 rule for social media.

90% Helpful (Giving Back)

This should be made up of links and messages that help the people following you in doing something better. Find cool items they would appreciate. The more you can match what they find cool the better your buzz factor and the more people will visit your website, get on your email list and buy your stuff. People should say to themselves “Hey, Chris always has good stuff!” Get your followers in a habit of clicking on your links and reading your tweets and it’ll help you with the 10%.

10% You (Giving and Taking)

Once you have a good number of followers like 2000 and you have done a great job of providing really good content that your followers love, you can ask for them to check out your latest blog post or anything that benefits you. With the 90/10 rule people will know you as a giver. So when you do your 10% give it in a way that is a benefit to your followers. Don’t make it a blatant advertisement. Tweet about checking out your blog post or your free teleclass or webinar. Use Twitter as a front end to your sales funnel. People get used to you on Twitter and then check out your stuff on your websites before buying anything from you.

Is the 90-10 rule hard and fast?

No. It’s just a good rule of thumb. I haven’t added up what I’ve done. It’s just my basic plan. Social media isn’t a science, but the 90/10 rule has helped me great deal prioritize what I post. I use it to make sure I give way more than I take from Twitter.

Best tweets and time to tweet

Based on my experience the most effective time is 4:30 to 6pm ET. I believe this is due to many people catching up on Twitter in the afternoon and evening. I’ve also heard that very late at night or after midnight is good as people will see them in the morning before going to work. This doesn’t work for how I schedule my day so I don’t have any personal experience.

The most common clicked tweets are statements and opening questions. Using the word best, most, great, worst and how to helped a lot as well. Just like blog post titles using these words create a lot of interest and people will click to read about it.

Tips for staying social:

Follow people who are in your niche
Meet others that have lists and can promote your product
Connect with other like you
Make friends and be genuine about it other social networking is not for you
Tweet cool web sites and resources
Don’t argue with people
Don’t use it for refund or disputes, call the company or person directly
Learn the art of the RT which stand for “retweet”. When you retweet you are sharing that tweet with your list so they can see it. If you share someone’s tweet they might share yours in the future.
Anything will be retweeted so write only things that you will be happy if retweeted
Watch people for at least a week before you get very active on twitter to learn what and how to do things.
Give first. Offer to promote them before asking for them to promote you.
Offer viral ebooks and reports on Twitter. A little report gets a better chance of retweeting than a big product.
Do not send a lot of messages without the @ symbol. The @ symbol gets you involved in your followers.
Twitter from you mobile phone.
Inspire people to pursue what they know

Do not twitter all day long. Use Twitter and don’t let it control you. Otherwise you wind up like that person in the video above which will just annoy your followers.

Twitter helpful for grievement?

I wrote on Monday about whether Twitter is good for business. A couple of hours later the violent death of my Uncle really hit me. Hit me hard. I couldn’t think straight. I was in sometype of time warp because what felt like five minutes was over an hour. So I decided to take a break which came out to be the rest of the day. I twittered about having difficulty with the death of my Uncle and then tried to go to the gym. I couldn’t drive so I took a nap instead. I listened to old scifi radio shows on my iPod, I did anything to get my mind off of my Uncle.

A few hours later I checked twitter and my life changed. I had so many of my twitter follower sending me well wished that I just felt so much better. People I only know on twitter where giving me emotional support. It honestly helped me.

So adding on to my list of eight reasons I like Twitter, I’m adding another one.

Thank you to everyone on twitter. You’re the best.

Is Twitter Good for Business?

My mastermind met for the first time in person over the weekend. Wendi from Wendi.com the famous online hypnotist was in Austin for a workshop. Wendi invited the mastermind group to her mastermind session after the workshop and the topic of twitter came up.

Twitter is a community of friends and strangers from around the world sending updates about moments in their lives. Friends near or far can use Twitter to remain somewhat close while far away. Curious people can make friends. Bloggers can use it as a mini-blogging tool. Developers can use the API to make Twitter tools of their own. Possibilities are endless!

She has done many test promoting only on twitter and separate tests to her email newsletter list and website. And her results? Twitter generated no sales. I’ve talked to many other business owners and the results are the same. I don’t know of anyone that makes money using twitter, except for people that sell coaching and other products on social media. They are doing extremely well.

So is twitter good for business if except for a small group of people that are making money? Absolutely it is worth it. It is a fantastic way to connect with people. I know many people that are using twitter to build a relationship with someone and then later turn that online relationship to an offline relationship and do products together.

Here are just some of the benefits of using twitter with your business:

Support – are you having a technical or other issue, let people know on twitter. It’s better than a rumor going around and if you are the first to address it you can retain control. Be honest and people will forgive you.
Marketing – think of twitter as just another front in. When you release a blog post or a product or service you can announce it on twitter. The people that visit your link may opt-in to your newsletter first before buying your product but it’s a good way to promote something. Just don’t just promote on twitter. Many people really hate that. Keep your mix of helpful articles, fun and promotion.
Knowledge network – if you follow other people on twitter in your field of expertise you have a huge resource. A virtual knowledge network to ask questions and help others. Some people you help may become your customers in the future. And you’ll learn which makes you even better at what you do.
Idea generating – you can ask your followers for ideas for a blog post or even your next product. Your audience knows what it wants you can simply ask them and deliver it to them.
Recruit – need someone to help you with something ask your followers on twitter and you’ll get recommendations. And the recommendations come very very fast. I’ve seen this happen many times and answers come in, in seconds.
Brand – twitter is just another way to expand your brand. If you don’t do it someone else will. I’ve seen many Bob Proctor copy cats on twitter in the last week or two. I hope the real Bob was one of the first.
Networking – business is done by networking. Much of my business is because someone referred me. Many businesses are like this whether you are selling a book, class or anything else. Networking is key and twitter allows you to do virtual networking easily.
Feedback – I’ve had a few people give me good honest feedback. Wendi twittered that she doesn’t follow people that thank every single person who are following you. I was doing this so I changed that as I was having many many people follow me everyday. BTW, thanking people to follow you is okay if you are not getting many followers everyday and then you can not do it once you start really growing.

How to lose friends

Recently a very good friend of mine had a falling out with a business partner. I don’t know the details but I was supportive. Then a couple of weeks later the business partner removed me from twitter.com (I use Twitter Quitter to track these things).

I ask why she unfollowed and blocked me on twitter so I can never follow her again? She mentioned it may be an overreaction but then retracted when she thought I supported my friend more than her. I don’t know the details to offer an opinion.

What makes no sense is why I was unfollowed and blocked on twitter and facebook for something that I have nothing to do with. It looks immature. I was completely not involved and wasn’t getting involved. I in fact didn’t care. But, then this person’s husband email me and my friend accounting details about the argument. Again I have no idea what this has to do with me. I responded asking how this involves me. Why anyone would email private accounting details to someone that isn’t involved in this I have no idea. My only guess is they want to prove their point to someone else. Why I would care I have no idea.

So what is the lesson out of all this?

When people are upset don’t “talk” via email. Upset people read emails and think they mean something entirely different from what the person wrote. I personally switch from email to phone after two tense emails, I think it should be one if it is especially bad.
Talking things through works much better.
Threatening that you’ll unleash an attack never seen before is immature. Telling someone that they are barred from talking to you is immature. Let’s be adults and talk things thru.
Blocking people that have nothing to do with a conflict just makes you look like the one at fault and is rude.
Sending personal accounting details to someone not involved is an evasion of privacy and simply rude. (To my friend, I didn’t read it and was shocked when I got it)
Don’t get involved in other people’s conflicts if you know any of them unless asked. People will think you are biased. Suggest a mediator instead which I did, no response yet.
Pick your fights. If you believe they will get extremely upset and start spreading rumors and it isn’t worth pursing the matter then just drop it and move on.

I believe all conflict can be eliminated if people will communication and all conflict is a lack of communication.

On a side note that may or may not have anything to do with this particular case:

Not transferring money because you owe the another person money is a form of money laundering. I’ve seen people do this on a much much bigger scale and go to jail. Just pay what is owed and let the dollars fall where they be. Tax collectors don’t like it either.
Use affiliate links when doing business with partners at all times, no matter what. Claiming people are your sales and you didn’t use an affiliate link is bad business.
Refusing to send an accounting report for weeks doesn’t help.

Blocking people on twitter is almost worthless as you can to to their twitter feed on twitter.com/ and then their username. People can still put you in replies on twitter. It does remove people from being able to direct message you when you block them.

So I have one person that is blocking me on twitter now and removed me as a friend on Facebook. I can live with it since I can’t do anything about it and I couldn’t have done anything to prevent it from happening. I hope it make the person feel better. And I hope this anonymous post helps you and my friend move on with life and that the attacks will end. You both deserve happiness.

P.S. Does anyone know of a web application that let’s you know who is blocking you? Twitter Quitter only tells you when people quit following you on twitter.

Social networking on the Internet is here and it’s mainstream for people that have Internet access.

Let’s Exchange Social Media Contacts

I created my Digg account back in 2005. During 2006 I also started using Del.icio.us. Until a couple of months ago, however, I was taking mostly a passive role within these social bookmarking sites. I would visit them several times a day, but rarely I would take the time to submit the interesting stuff that I was finding on my browsing sessions. This changed recently, when I realized that these communities would not work at all if everyone was to take such a passive role. I truly believe that social media is revolutionizing the way we communicate and work, so it was about time to contribute.

Long story short, I am now trying to be more active inside the social media sphere, and I thought it would be cool to write a post where all the readers could share their profiles and contacts. I browse around blogs and websites once a week, so if nothing else I will share with you the interesting stuff that Iâ€™ll come across. Here you can find my Stumble Upon profile and my Digg account. If you use them just add me as a friend and I will be glad to reciprocate.

I’m also on FaceBook, LinkedIn, Technorati and MySpace. I still don’t understand all the talk about MySpace. It looks so ugly I don’t like to even look at it. FaceBook, LinkedIn and Technorati are very nice.

I recently emailed my contacts to join me on FaceBook and LinkedIn. I’ve done this before, but this time what surprised me is the response. A lot of people joined. People that I thought would never join signed right up within minutes. I think people are more comfortable with these social networks now. Back in 2005 I didn’t know anyone else that was doing social networking online. Now it is fairly common.Â It reminds when I first got on the Internet back in 1989.Â I had one teacher online.Â Sending email was limited because only one other person on the campus had an email address and it was the teacher.Â Now having an email address is very common.
