The number one (and free) software for writing blog posts is Windows Live Writer. A fairly new application. This is my first post using it. Hope this helps you become more productive.

Just call Jott, say “Google Calendar”, and then the time of the event and what it’s about….and you’re done. We’ll take your voice, convert it to text, and insert it into your calendar for you. “Meet Cathy at 9 am next Thursday” is no longer a to do that needs another step, it’s something that’s recorded in your Calendar.

Adding Amazon items to your website

A client yesterday how to sell items on Amazon on her website and get a commission.

It’s real simple.

1. Visit amazon.com/associates and become an Associate and get paid when you sell their stuff

2. Hire or contact us about a plugin for your content manangement system that will change any links to products on Amazon that you put on your website so that you get credit when people click on it. You can use Amazon Associates tools to create the link based on the items ISBN number but this plugin makes it so much easier.

iPhone blogging

I was on a business trip for a week in beautiful Miami at a hotel that had broken Internet access.

With my new iPhone I was still able to check email and browse the web but I couldn’t blog on this website. Until today. A new feature we have available for our web hosted clients is the ability to blog from your iPhone. It’s easy to install for people that are technically inclined and of course we can do it for you for only $20.

It provides a very simple user interface on your iPhone to add an article to your website. You’ll have the ability to blog from anywhere in the world with the best smart phone on the market.

Protect your stuff

We have been running an advanced RAID data protection system for years. It takes special hardware and two hard drives that are exactly the same. If one fails you have to replace it with an exact hard drive which years later can be hard to find.

Drobo is a very easy system that allows you to add hard drives and upgrade hard drives as you grow with no special skills. All the hard drives can be different sizes also. This is a really great way for novices to protect their data from hard drive failures for an incredible low price.

One of the cooler tech gadgets I’ve seen in a while.

Disk Encryption

TrueCrypt is a fantastic on the fly disk encryption that is open-source. You want an open-source encryption program so that you know that no backdoors are written in. Many commercial encryption programs have written backdoors in. Steve Gibson talks about TrueCrypt including some very cool plausible deniability aspects as part of Security Now episode 41. This is the best way to do the highest encryption.

Storing passwords/passphrases

Password Safe is a tool that allows you to have a different password for all the different programs and websites that you deal with, without actually having to remember all those usernames and passwords. The program encrypts the password file.

Along with BestCrypt see our article on it, you can keep the program and you password file on an encrypted drive (double protection). The long passphrase for your encrypted drive should not be recorded using this program or written down anywhere.

Securing your computer

If you have a broadband connection get a hardware firewall, like the D-Link DI-604 and change the password on it.
Install ZoneAlarm the free version on each of your computers
Test your Internet security by visiting Shields Up.
Back your computer as necessary as your business needs and store offsite, read our article on backing up
Turn on Microsoft’s Internet Connection Firewall
Make sure your computer is physically secure from others getting to it
Make sure you install the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and run it. It will scan for common system misconfigurations on your computer. You can get this great tool at the Microsoft Security home page.
Run Office Update every month
Also visit Microsoft Security Guidance Center to get different checklists to help you secure your system.
Visit Black Viper’s Windows XP Services website on what services you can turn off that you really don’t need which will help your computer run faster
Use at least 14 character passwords, see our article of creating decent passwords
Encrypt confidential files, see our article on keeping files private
Read our article on what not to forward to people
